10 Reasons To Consider Weight Loss Surgery

Web Design Contest Vote

Yesterday I stated reasons that an individual should avoid considering WLS. With death being the top of the list personally I feel there is no reason to have the surgery, but just as I educated myself about the dangers I also educated myself about some benefits. In the end each individual will need to weigh the pros and cons for there own personal journey towards a healthier lifestyle in relation to WLS.

  1. Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes - Type 2 diabetes is cured in 80 percent of diabetic patients after weight loss.
  2. Abnormal Glucose Tolerance - Hyperglycemia and associated conditions like hyperinsulimia and insulin resistance are even more likely to benefit from gastric bypass.
  3. High blood pressure (hypertension) is cured in about 50 percent of patients who successfully undergo weight loss surgery. Cholesterol levels and other heart risk factors also typically improve.
  4. Sleep Apnea - Is cured in about 75 percent of patients after surgery. Shortness of Breath (Hypoventilation) is significantly improved in 75-80 percent of patients
  5. Asthma - Reduction in the number and severity of asthma attacks, especially if the asthma is associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease.
  6. Lower Back Pain and Arthritis is typically relieved after surgery, as is heartburn, urinary incontinence, and venous problems of the leg.
  7. Increased awareness of the types of foods consumed and portion sizes.
  8. 80% reduction in the amount spent annually on medications.
  9. Reduced risk to contract certain forms of cancer.
  10. The risk of the surgery is less than the risk of pre-existing conditions.

This continued journey into WLS that was fueled by the rumor of plus size celebrity Mo’Nique and size acceptance supporter and her consideration of pursuing WLS.  While I personally feel it is not something for me I have talked to several individuals that it was the best thing for them and others that it was a mistake.  A good friend told me years ago, “You will never make a change until a situation becomes objectionable to you.”  In other words, ultimately it is up to the individual in choosing to proceed with WLS regardless of the risks or what anyone has to say.

I am educated in this area and WLS should be the LAST thing on everyones list no matter how old or young you are. Exercise and eating healthy are the best things for you which is easier said than done. Eating right is probably the hardest thing. You know you should eat right but you can’t help having that extra cookie at lunch or that extra helping at dinner. You feel as if you are not in control and you start to think you have no will-power. You don’t. You don’t control what you crave. You insulin does. When your insulin is low you will grab anything high in sugar and fat to satsify it simply becasue you have to or you WILL pass out. But not to worry, there are ways to fix this. Start eating foods that your body needs and WANTS! Don’t believe when people are telling you not to have protiens and fats together in a meal, or proteins and carbohydrates in one meal. You body needs all the macronutrients together. They are broken down together. Your body was made to break them all down at the same time. An example of eating healthy is: breakfast. If you start your day off with a nice helping of fiber your body will love you! Fiber is absorbed into your body very slowly which is good because you will be full until lunch and not think about food. Eating fiber for breakfast would not only keep your hunger at bay but also help you feel good! Fiber is only an example of one step to helping your body without WLS. (But if you are new to eating fiber in the moring or any other part of the day, start off with a small amount of it or you will have gas and stomach pain. Start off small and make your way up to a normal helping every three to five day). I know many women who had type 2 diabeties, who were extremely over weight and changed their lives. They found a good personal trainer and a nutritionist. Seeing a nutritionist is most important because they can give you a list of foods that are good and an exercise plan. They aren’t going to sugarcoat things becasue they know that you want help. The first few weeks are always hard and those are the times when you have to push yourself and remind yourself of your goal. After, when you reach your goal and you have extra weight that just will not come off or extra skin from your weightloss then consider surgery. You never know what you can do if you don’t try. After you loose the weight by yourself your going to feel as if you can take on the world. There is sense of great accomplishment after something this dramatic. Remember, after those fist weeks everything will come naturally to you. The hardest thing about going to the store and buying food yourself is reading the label. A nutritionist will explain that on labels, words like salt and sugar have MANY different names and that if something is higher in soduim then it is is in potassium then to put it back. Don’t go by calories! 100 calories in cheesecake and 100 calories in broccoli are totally different. Your body can absorb that cheesecake extremely fast! Your body absorbs the broccoli so slow that you wouldn’t be able to eat all of it! I know I’ve been all over and its extremely overwhelming but if you take the time out to learn and educate yourself on nutrition then everything will start to come together. Don’t want to go see a nutritionist? Is a nutritionist too expensive? Go to a bookstore or your local library and pick up a nutriotion for dummies book. I know that sounds horrible but they are the best book out there for people learning about their body. The book breaks down everything into terms that are easy to understand. Just by eating right you are protecting yourself against all kinds of illnesses from a common cold to cancer. Good luck!
