In the five years that I have been writing about plus size clothing and accessories it has gotten easier than ever to buy trendy clothing thanks to the Internet and designers realizing the power behind the plus size fashion movement.

Though it is easier the steps needed to build a quality wardrobe still rely on good old common sense.  If you are like me you just need a reminder of what you need to ensure you get the most for your shopping dollar.

1. Know your size.   To some this is a given, but not knowing your size can cost you a ton of money.   Be professionally measured and keep those measurements handy it will save you time and money when it’s time to shop.
2. Shop off season.  For instance now is the time to buy Spring fashions.  Next month start looking for fashions for Summer and Fall.
3. Build a wardrobe.  Buy enough separates that you can mix and match for any occasion.   Avoid buying clothes that can only be worn to specific events.
4. Alterations, alterations alterations. Men have been doing it for centuries.  Remember ladies you all have unique hips and curves so why not have clothes that fit?  Repeat after me, alterations, alterations, alterations.
5. Shop in unique places like Amazon.com.  The Internet is full of cool places like Ebay for instance which is where I discovered Monif C. Plus Sizes many years ago.
6. Consignment shops have broken out to the pack to become forces in the plus size fashion industry.  Re/DressNYC is a leader reseller of vintage plus size clothing.
7. Sign up for newsletters like the Full Figure Plus Newsletter to stay on top of information on sales and special discounts available only to list members.
8. Buy in bulk if possible by making large purchases 2-3 times a year. Additionally, go through your clothes at least 3 times a year to get rid of what is worn out or you can’t wear.
9. Check thrift stores for bargains as well as rare finds.  Side Note:  This will not always be the best for plus size fashion but its worth a try.
