Have you ever thought about things you should not do when it comes to getting dressed in the morning?  I just had that very conversation with my wife this morning about a particular dress that makes her look larger than she is.  With that in mind below are so definite don’ts when it comes to getting dressed, especially for plus size goddesses.

  1. Clothes that don’t fit right
  2. Clothes that don’t go together in both color and style
  3. Not wearing the right clothes for your body type (Very Important)
  4. Out of date clothes – Be careful with vintage pieces
  5. Outdated Makeup – throw out any makeup over 18 months old
  6. Huge Hair
  7. Knee highs and skirts
  8. Shiny stockings
  9. Dressing in a way that does not fit your age
  10. Too short pieces
  11. Underwear lines – should this be #1?
  12. Being the Accessory ninja – it will make people’s eyes hurt
  13. Large Prints – this will only make you look bigger
  14. G-string in view – No one wants to see your undies!!
  15. Low Rider Jeans – This style of jeans is not made for the plus size frame
  16. Dark undies under light clothes – See #14
  17. Fade inspired glasses – ok for sunglasses not ok for your everyday pair
  18. Stand up straight – Your posture helps you look more confident in your clothes
  19. Gladiator sandals and pantyhose – Do I really need to point this one out?
  20. Long grey frizzy hair – Does not make you look younger – sorry
  21. Jeggings and midriff shirts – This seems to be the armour of ladies that obviously don’t need to wear it – Just say no
  22. Long dangling earrings that constantly get caught in your clothes

When I think about the list of course there are probably more things that can be added.  The point is to not be the fashion police and tell you what you can and can’t do.  The point is to help you look your best at all times and to take any ammunition away from the critics.  What are your thoughts on getting dressed what are some of your best tips?

what happened to having fun with fashion? :) I do make sure to have a good bra, wear clothes that have the right fit in good fabrics, but other than that I don’t want to be limited by all the dont`s to be honest. interesting post though :)

      Anika,

You can still have fun with fashion. The point of this post and those like it is to look your best at all times. For some these tips are a no-brainer for others they are words to live by.

Seriously? You don’t like “Gladiator sandals and pantyhose”? LOL Too cute.

I’m really not one for “don’ts” either. I find many of them limiting (not yours per se, I mean in general). Like the old, fat women should only wear black one we grew up with. I think what you have here are “tips for looking your best” rather than “don’ts” which have been frowned on a lot recently.

I think the most important one you have here is fit. But I think a lot of people don’t understand what proper fit is for different types of clothing. Like low rider jeans for instance. If you bend over and your butt peeks out — they don’t fit! This would be an important check to do in the change room before making the big purchase.

      Moe,

You make a good point. I will make it a point from hear on out to limit the use of the word don’t when delivering my message. lol and no I do not think gladiator sandals and pantyhose are cool.

    Wow.
Is this site supposed to be fat positive? “Don’t wear large prints as they will make you larger”? Not all women are trying to look like a size two, or smaller than what they really are. Also, who the hell cares if clothing “fits your body type?” I wear drop crotch harem pants all the time, is that necessarily flattering? Probably not, but why should I be limited to empire waist, knee-length dresses, and knee-length shorts etc etc etc?
I’m not saying your points are valid, but they definitely apply to more than just plus sized women, and definitely do not apply to plus size women who KNOW they’re FAT, and aren’t trying to hide it.

Yes Glen, underwear lines is always the number 1 don’t! I would appreciate it if your would do a blog on “age appropriate dressing.” There are a lot of woman who do not have the slightest idea what this means.

    • Glen Johnson says:

I have found that talking about age appropriate dressing is still a controversial topic…it is not that ladies can’t wear what they want but it is more about dressing equal to the station in life they have earned. For sure it is not about policing what ladies wear.

  5. Sarah says:

Goodness. Let’s not be so sensitive and testy. Glen is simply giving us his point of view on fashion dont’s. Just like I will be the first on here to add my own don’t: DON’T wear jeans/pants that are too tight. This only causes your belly to hang over the top of the jeans creating a very unflattering roll of fluffy goodness. For those of us with certain body types, it can be a nightmare and only create more attention in unnecessary areas. I am a stickler, as a big woman, about the body type issue and wearing what flatters you because, honestly, we are fighting a fashion war as plus size slowly but surely weasels it’s way into the world.
