corinnamakris

Good Morning FFP,

Glen will be returning full time soon and I wanted to make sure I let y’all know how much fun I’ve had stopping by and writing here at Full Figure Plus. It’s been a great opportunity for me and I have really enjoyed hearing from you. I hope to be communicating with you again in the land of internet and please feel free to stop by A Celebration of Curves and say hello.

I also wanted to let everyone know that the $54 million pants lawsuit was determined in favor of the dry cleaners and the judge has also told Judge Pearson (who brought the case) that he must pay the Chung family’s (the owners of Custom Cleaners) court costs. Awarding costs is not the same as awarding attorney’s fees–the big financial blow in any legal matter–and Judge Bartnoff said she would make that decision at a later date. The Chungs were laid low by Pearson’s two-year pursuit of the case; their legal fees wiped out their savings and forced them to consider moving back to their native land of South Korea. In addition, as the Chungs’ lawyer, Christopher Manning, pointed out this morning, the Chungs still face the potentially enormous and almost certain costs of defending themselves against an almost-inevitable appeal of Bartnoff’s decision by Pearson. So really, even though the Chung’s won the case it is at a terrible cost.

Meanwhile, a tort reform group is hosting a fundraiser on July 24 to help the Chungs defray their legal expenses. Information at Chung Fundraiser

What do you think of this?

corinnamakris

Good Morning FFP!

Have you been following this story in the news? An administrative judge for the District of Columbia, is pressing a $54 million lawsuit Tuesday against a dry cleaning shop. I’m not sure what an “administrative” judge is and if you know please post the answer here. There is no prize … just the pleasure of sharing knowledge! So to continue, Judge Roy Pearson said that the family operated dry cleaning store violated consumer-protection laws when they lost his pants.

Judge Pearson told a local court that Custom Cleaners should pay the sum because a “satisfaction guaranteed” sign deceived consumers who, like him, were dissatisfied with their experience. “You will search the records of the District of Columbia courts in vain for a case of more egregious or willful misconduct,” Pearson told D.C. Judge Judith Bartnoff.

EXCUSE ME?! I can think of many more serious and egregious crimes than a dry cleaner losing a pair of men’s pants. I mean, if they had lost my Italian silk dress I could understand but cuffless men’s pants?! Talk about egregious!

Judge Bartnoff will announce her judgment tomorrow, Monday, June 25th.

The lawyer for the Korean immigrants who run the dry cleaner said Pearson was looking for a way to resolve his financial difficulties after a divorce.

Pearson filed suit after the cleaners lost his pants in 2005. Jin Chung, Soo Chung and Ki Chung said they located the pants a few days later, but Pearson said they were not his. Pearson counted 12 separate violations of a consumer-protection law over 1,200 days, multiplied by the three defendants. At $1,500 per day, that is $65 million. He also seeks $15,000 to rent a car to take his clothes to another cleaner for the next 10 years, among other charges. Pearson has rejected several settlement offers and has since reduced his original claim of $67 million to $54 million.

The Chungs, who immigrated from South Korea in 1992, have grown disillusioned with the United States and might return to their native country, Manning said.

The Washington Post questioned whether Pearson should remain in his job hearing cases involving the decisions of D.C. government agencies. “The case raises serious questions about his judgment and temperament,” the newspaper wrote in an editorial. He became visibly emotional when he reached the point in the story where he confronted Soo Chung from the dry cleaning store.

“These are not my pants,” he testified yesterday, telling her “I have in my adult life, with one exception, never worn pants with cuffs.”

But Chung insisted, Pearson testified.

“These are your pants.”

Pearson rushed from the courtroom, tears streaming down his face.

Pearson has a long history with the Chungs. In 2002, there was a disagreement over another pair of Pearson’s pants that Custom Cleaners allegedly lost. The Chungs compensated Pearson with $150 and then Pearson was banned from the store, defense attorney Christopher Manning claimed in court. Manning said that Pearson pleaded with the Chungs to let him back into the store, because he didn’t have a car, he said, and they were the only dry cleaners in the neighborhood.

Even fellow trial lawyers are offended.

“It’s outrageous and it’s shameful,” Bill Schulz, spokesman for the American Association for Justice, the largest trial lawyer group in the nation, told ABC News. The A.A.J. filed a complaint about Pearson recently with the District of Columbia bar association.

corinnamakris

Hey everyone! I just rented the movie Stranger Than Fiction last night and I am so excited to tell you about it. I promise I won’t spoil anything about the plot and I won’t reveal anything that wasn’t in a preview.

Stranger Than Fiction is not a new movie and you may have already seen it but if you haven’t I really recommend it. Will Ferrell plays Harold Crick, a man who hears an author’s voice in his head narrating his life. Emma Thompson plays a novelist who is trying to decide how to kill the main character of her novel (hmm … who could that be?). Dustin Hoffman is a literature professor helping Harold determine whether he is in a comedy or a tragedy. Add Maggie Gyllenhaal as a baker with an attitude to wake Harold up from his boring life and you have got yourselves a romantic comedy with a quirky twist.

I have been thinking about how my life would be different if I heard a voice describing my daily routine. Would I be more bold? Would I take more chances? How would my decision to face my fears change my tomorrow?

I love that Gyllenhaal’s character has tattoos, wants to fight the government and really speaks her mind. I’m not saying that you should run out and get a tattoo but I like that she’s got guts and fights for what she believes in. She’s not a typical looking female lead for a mainstream Hollywood romantic movie and I like that about this film. Will Ferrell isn’t a typical Hollywood male romantic lead, he usually plays kooky characters and in this film he is understated and shy. A man afraid to pursue his dreams; Harold’s life is changed dramatically not when he begins hearing the narrator’s voice but when he decides to take action. Harold changes his habits, tries new things and say things that terrify him. His life expands in wonderful ways even when sometimes individual events don’t turn out as he might have hoped.

This film is about self-esteem and finding a place where you feel good about being you; even when you don’t feel good about yourself. I found Harold to be a very inspiring character and I know that I will see this movie again.

corinnamakris

As Glen has been saying on Full Figure Plus for some time now, we are seeing very positive changes in the plus size fashion industry. On the heels of Old Navy announcing that they will no longer be selling plus sizes in their stores and will be carrying those sizes only online comes this Plus Size Shopping announcement from Maurices.

On June 11, 2007, Maurices launched a new plus shop, featuring sizes 16-24, in over 400 of its stores nationwide. The assortment of the new 16-24 concept will offer casual, career, and dressy looks that are stylish, on trend, and complementary to Maurices current apparel mix.

“We’re excited to meet the needs of a new customer who, up until now, has had limited fashion choices available to her in our communities,” says Lisa Rhodes, Executive Vice President and Chief Merchandising Officer at Maurices. “We created the plus size line to satisfy the multiple lifestyles of the young, savvy, fashion-conscious customer who shops at Maurices, while giving special attention to details that flatter a curvier figure.”

The launch of sizes 16-24 represents an exciting turning point in the evolution of the Maurices brand. “We made this strategic decision to exit the men’s business that was in over 300 stores so that we could focus on our female customer, “the girl in everyone, in every size” allowing us to communicate a more feminine attitude,” says Rhodes.

I have visited their website and while they only show a sample of styles on the site, the merchandise does seem to reflect Maurices’ stated commitment to offer fashions and accessories that let women express their individuality and personality. From denim and screened tees to dresses and career looks, the 16-24 plus line offers fashionable styles for the fashion conscious plus-size female customer. The site features form fitting clothes that are cut with curves in mind, hugging your hips and flattering the bosom. Very attractive prints and styles make me want to run out and go shopping.

Maurices is wholly owned by Dressbarn Inc.
