Be Careful Your Friends are Making you fat

Web Design Contest Vote

When I read the article plus size Friends Equals a plus size You, where there is talk about if you have a friend, family member or loved one that is fat then you will be fat to it makes me think about “monkey see monkey do” which is not the way most people think.

I do lots of things that I see others do but that does not add up to me mimicking them in mind, body and soul.  What makes more sense is that if I am big, which I am, then I am more likely to hang around individuals that are big as well.  Even that has its faults.  I don’t go out to intentionally make friends with the fat folks and I am sure most people don’t have a body type that they exclusively associate with.  If there is a common cause and a lot of fat folks show up then it is highly likely that I will make friends with a few of them.

The article also stated, “But it’s not just your friends who may affect your perceived body image. If your sibling is obese, your chances of being obese go up 40%. If your husband or wife is& your chances of being obese are 37%.”  My perceived body image is shaped by my environment, but there is no such thing as shape shifters except on Star Trek so its safe to say that just because you stand by a fat person you won’t get fat.

It’s as if this study is equating being larger to some sort of regenerative disease.  I wonder if Meme Roth sponsored this study, but I digress.  What are your thoughts on this matter.

Hi Glenn, although I agree with most of the points you make, one cannot ignore the fact that usually people that usually close friends, and moreover partners would have a lot in common. In turn they’d spend lots of time together, doing most of the same things together. So a certain lifestyle and tastes would in a way affect both. It’s kind of hard to explain, though in some ways there is some truth in this.
