Why Designers Should Consult With Plus-Size Shoppers

Share

A few days ago I had a conversation with a stylist who will soon be appearing on Full Figure Plus and she made the comment, “The plus size shopper is a more conscientious shopper because she has to be careful of how she spends her shopping dollar.”  That statement made me think and what I came to the conclusion that because of how demanding plus size shoppers are they should hold a seat at the right hand of designers if they are not the designer themselves.

Thinking of conversations that have played out over the years concerning shopping trips this is why designers are in need of the help of the plus shopper:

  • Plus shoppers look closer at craftsmanship
  • Plus shoppers pay more attention to the type of fabric a garment is made from
  • Plus shoppers will purchase multiple colors of a style of garment they like

Airline Math That Does Not Add Up

I told you guys that I missed the first night of Full Figured Fashion Week and would let you know why.  Below is the letter I am going to forward to American Airlines but I thought I would also share with you guys the nightmare I experienced.

Dear American Airlines,

Me and my wife booked a roundtrip flight from Little Rock, AR to New York via LaGuardia Airport to depart June 16, 2010 on AA flight 4356 and return June 20, 2010.  Our departure was such a debacle that I felt moved to not only let you know my thoughts on the matter but to share it with others.

Full Figured Fashion Week™ Wrapup Part One

Thinking about the 2nd Annual Full Figured Fashion Week™ I have come to the conclusion that it really does not matter what the critics think there is no stopping what Gwen Devoe and those involved have set in motion.  Think of it like this there has be somewhat of a ministry (blog coverage) and motion (Full Figured Fashion Week™ growth) which translate into a movement.  Last year was history in the making and there was little to no mainstream media coverage. This year the activities were covered by the New York Times, Essence magazine,Vougue Italia, Glamour.com, Aquila – Asia, The Huffingtion Post, The Winnepeg Sun, and I am sure others.  Remember ministry plus motion equals movement.

The point is simple full figured fashion is on front street and it was brought there on the back of people like Gwen.  It was my pleasure to be able to meet here and talk with her and all the volunteers, participants, models, bloggers, and admirers of Full Figured Fashion Week™.  On to the juicy stuff.

Full Figured Fashion Week™: The PLUS Side of Business Afterthoughts

As I look through my notes in regard to the The PLUS Side of Business during the 2010 Full Figured Fashion Week™ activities I can’t help but reflect on the people who attended the panel.  There was representation from literally around the world who came to hear the words from those on the panel and myself talk about starting a business with a plus focus whether it is a blog like Full Figure Plus or designing plus size clothes for IGIGI.  The house was packed with ladies from of course New York, but when I found out there were ladies in attendance from Canada, France, Brazil, and Great Britain I was blown away.

If that does not tell you that there are people out there hungry for information on how to best serve the plus community I don’t know what will.  I was paying just as much attention to the words being said as those in attendance and let me tell you there was some great information being given out.

NAAFA Scholarship To Help Aspiring Plus Size Fashion Designers

Good news in the world of plus size fashion.  NAAFA: The National Association for the Advancement of Fat Acceptance is looking to give aspiring plus size fashion designers a chance to win a scholarship.

I like seeing organizations put their money where there mouth is.  NAAFA along with many bloggers like to see designers who cater to them.  This scholarship will help launch the next round of A-list designers.  Kudos to NAAFA!

The purpose of the $1,000.00 scholarship is to encourage student fashion designers to specialize in the design of fashions for the plus-size body.
