Full Figured Fashion Week™ Wrapup Part One

Thinking about the 2nd Annual Full Figured Fashion Week™ I have come to the conclusion that it really does not matter what the critics think there is no stopping what Gwen Devoe and those involved have set in motion.  Think of it like this there has be somewhat of a ministry (blog coverage) and motion (Full Figured Fashion Week™ growth) which translate into a movement.  Last year was history in the making and there was little to no mainstream media coverage. This year the activities were covered by the New York Times, Essence magazine,Vougue Italia, Glamour.com, Aquila – Asia, The Huffingtion Post, The Winnepeg Sun, and I am sure others.  Remember ministry plus motion equals movement.

The point is simple full figured fashion is on front street and it was brought there on the back of people like Gwen.  It was my pleasure to be able to meet here and talk with her and all the volunteers, participants, models, bloggers, and admirers of Full Figured Fashion Week™.  On to the juicy stuff.

A Day In Plus Size History – The Mexican Dress

Three years ago Full Figure Plus readers were introduced to the Mexican Peubla Dress and a year later an update on this simple dress with the rich Native American heritage.   Not long ago Miriam the creator of the Mexican Dress was kind enough to contact me to report on a new dress pattern, the Native American Triad Dress Pattern, and to let me know of the success of the sale of dress patterns and that the plus size patterns are selling very well.

For those not familiar with this type of dress it is a simple tunic design that celebrates the roots of  Indian history from North, Central and South America.  This dress takes inspiration from the three sacred crops; corn, beans and squash, which have formed the basis of North, Central and South American Indian diets for thousands of years. Additionally, the dress celebrates these life-giving plants in a beautiful way, and, like the Mexican dress pattern, this ultra-simple dress is made from just 3 rectangles. It makes a beautiful sun dress, can be used like a sarong to coverup at the beach or pool, or other daily wear. It can be worn with our without a belt and is really graceful.

This Day In Plus Size History – Freedom Resorts

On March 11, 2005 I wrote about the Freedom Paradise resort being at the time the only resort for people of size.  To my knowledge there is no other resort like it today and I must say that I am a bit perplexed that there is not more of a buzz about a place that is size friendly in how the property is designed and how they cater to their clients.  After reading the testimony below I am not sure why there is not more in the mainstream blog world about businesses like this.

A Lesson in Shopping For and Using A Washer/Dryer Combo

Before Thanksgiving last year we had to replace our washing machine.  My lovely assistant wanted to get one of those washer/dryer combo units to save us the time and effort that resulted from hanging clothes on the line outside or having to go to the laundry mat during the winter.  What does this have to do with plus size fashion?  Your laundry habits will change your shopping habits by justifying the added cost of some clothes as well as knowing that you have a machine that will properly clean your favorite pieces.  Read on.

We went shopping for units only to be stonwalled by sales people saying that combo units could only wash one item and did not clean as well as washing and drying in separate units.  Side Note:  Folks if you do not want to have a huge frustrating day do not shop for 3 major appliances in one day. After discovering we would not be able to find a combo unit locally we shopped online and found the Triton Ventless Combination Washer/Dryer that you see in the photo.
