Long time Full Figure Plus readers remember part of the foundation of this blog is to help ladies find affordable comfortable bras.  Most of what you will see listed below is not new the information has been around for years but the question still on peoples lips is, “Are you wearing the right size bra?”

Knowing what size bra you wear is dependent on two numbers.  Those numbers are the bra or band size and cup size.  To find out these numbers you will need a tape measure if you are doing it yourself or the preferred method is to have a professional measure for you..

If you prefer to do it out by hand, read and follow the instructions below. You will need a tape measure (preferably paper), and a pencil.  You should be wearing the most comfortable bra you have while doing this but it is not required.

There are 2 variables we need to determine to correctly find your band and cup size. These are your frame size and your chest+breast size.  Remember these are not set in stone rules if you are a natural 42G but feel more comfortable in a 44DDD then go for it!  Side Note: Try different styles on you maybe surprised at what you come up with.

1. Determine Frame & Bra Size
The frame size is the diameter around your chest JUST BELOW your breasts. Using the tape measure, measure around your ribcage directly under your breasts. There should be no breast tissue measured while determining your frame size. Record your results.

To determine the bra size, add 5 to this number. If the number you get is odd, round up to the next even number. For example, if your frame size is 36 inches, when you add 5 to this you get 41 inches. You should therefore round up to the even number which is 32 inches (since bras only come in even numbers). This is your bra size, 42 inches.

2. Determine Breast Size
Next measure around your chest over and including the fullest part of your bust (usually at the level of the nipples). Technically, you should take this measurement while wearing a comfortable bra. This is the diameter of your chest+breast. Record this number.

3. Calculate Cup Size
Now, take the chest + breast size number, and subtract your bra size number. Then use the table below to determine your cup size.

Difference (line 5 minus 4) Cup Size
0 to 1/2 inch AA
1/2 to 1 inch A
1 to 2 1/2 inches B
2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches C
3 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches D
4 1/2 to 6 inches DD (E)
6 to 7 inches DDD (F)
7 to 8 inches G

4. Example
Let’s assume your frame size is 41 inches, your bra size is therefore 46 inches (41 + 5 = 46 inches). In addition, assume you measured your chest+breast size at 50 inches. Now, take your chest+breast size (50), and subtract your bra size (46). You get 4 inches as the difference. Using the table above, you find that anyone with a difference between 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches (including 4) has a cup size D. Your correct bra and cup size is therefore 46 D.

The most important part of the equation it to always have enough bras to rotate them in and out so they do not lose their support properties.  This can be achieved by having between 6-8 daily and 2-3 special occasion bras on hand at all times.  Hand washing and air drying will also ensure the bra you worked so hard to make sure fits properly stays in tip top condition.

FYI: Don’t be confused by their size chart a size 0 is the same as a 10/12 and a 5 is equal to a 5x.  If you can’t find your size at Torrid it is probably sold out!
