Custom comfort with the Mexican Puebla dress

Last night I received an email from Miriam about an idea that she has for a “Mexican dress”. What I liked most about the email was the fact that it came as a result of the new “contact” form that I placed on Full Figure Plus.

Instead of reinventing the wheel I will get to the basics of this dress. Thanks Miriam for bringing this to my attention.

  • It’s made from a simple pattern ($5 to download the pattern)
  • Custom fitted to any size (including plus size)
  • It embraces sewing and embroidery
  • Showcases Mexican heritage

Read more about the Mexican dress in Miriam’s own words:Mexican DressI hope it’s not imposing to write to you, but I thought you might be interested
in seeing the Mexican Puebla dress I completed sewing and embroidering a couple
of months ago. My family owns an heirloom dress of this kind from Oaxaca,
Mexico, but it’s a little worse for wear. When I couldn’t find a good local
source for a new gown, I decided to make my own. By studying the pattern, I was
able to create a set of directions for myself from which I could recreate this
garment. The amazing thing is…it’s made out of 5 rectangles. What a breeze!
It’s really more like a crafting project than a heavy-duty sewing one. I sewed
the dress and then went on a flight of fancy embroidering it with birds (I’m an
avid birder) and flowers that have special meanings to me. It turned out so
well, I realized I could share what I’d learned, and I’m writing to you in case
you’d like to see my dress: http://www.themexicandress.com

My husband and I run a web design firm and several blogs (no clothing ones
yet!) and I know we are always looking for neat little things to blog about. I
wondered if my dress would be interesting enough for blogging material for you?
This folk garment has existed in Mexico since the 1600′s and has been in style
in the U.S. since the 1960′s. People just love these comfortable, cotton summer
sundresses, but they are hard to come by if you don’t live in Mexico or Southern
California. Yet, if you can cut out rectangles and run a sewing machine, you can
make your own. I made and embroidered my whole dress in less than a week.
Because the dress is based on taking your own measurements, it fits whoever
makes it.

It’s so kind of you to take the time to read my note, and I would be so
thrilled if you’d take a gander at my dress and see if it’s blog-worthy. I
really appreciate your consideration.

Kind Regards,
Miriam Ellis

I was shopping for a new Puebla dress, and I found this website. I have worn them for years. Of course, I live in sunny Southern California.

Your new dress is really lovely, and quite unique. The embroidery is much more delicate than the commercial dresses.
