Diary of a Plus Size Blogger: Belly Fat in children may increase health risks

Web Design Contest Vote

Whenever I read an article that talks about the health risks of being fat I must admit that I approach it from the point of view that I won’t read much that relates to sensible information.

After reading up on the risk of belly fat in children in the US, and how, “Nearly one in five American children grew big enough around the middle to be considered abdominally obese by 2004, a 65 percent increase in belly fat over just six years,”, it makes me wonder about the validity of some of the health concerns that are being talked about by the medical community, which for the most part I have dismissed.

Learning that abdominal fat is more dangerous than a person’s BMI score makes more sense to me than saying that a large person was at risk simply because they are fat. Noting that belly fat surround vital organs with increase risk is something that I can see. Today’s children are not as active as in years past so I can see how there would be more of a risk for certain diseases becasue of increased belly fat.

Now don’t get me wrong I am far from being on the side of the fence that says that parents need to run out and put there kids on dangerous diets and to force them into a situation that there weight is always something that is talked about. If belly fat is something that can be tracked and if reduced can lower the risk of a child developing early onset diabetes then that in my opinion is a good thing.

There still is no gauge as to how a child or adults midsection should be measured or how to tell if there is any risk involved, so the study for now is just the beginning. I still feel that kids today should put the video games and the television to rest and become more active.

New schools being built should have gymnasiums in them and not fall to the pressure from people who say that gym class destroys kids self esteem. Neighborhoods should be built with side walks and parks in the to encourage activity among children so even if there are children that have some belly fat its less likely that they will have any health problems because of it.
