A few days ago I read on Big Fat Blog about the video and song Skinny by the group Low Rider and it brought up the question is the song making fun of fat women. In doing some looking around after reading the original post I came across a comment that said the ladies where on the “positive side of being fat”. Kind of like the video was a necessary evil. At least thats what I got from it. Considering that I see nothing but positive period when it comes to ladies and gentlemen that are fat I don’t fully understand the context in which the comment was made.
Did I see a lot of things in the video that are exploitative towards women? If I look at 98% of videos on television today I can find the same things. I think that its past time that people of size stop being sensitive about media portrayal that is not in a blatant manner exploiting people of size. Clearly there is nothing in this video that is exploiting fat people.
When I looked at the video response from the ladies involved in the project I saw a few things. Plus size models that where called in at the last minute to perform a job. For those that are in the modeling industry last minute know calls are a part of the industry. I also saw ladies speaking frankly about there size. I see nothing negative about either one of those things.
Considering the lack of plus size models in mainstream media today I have nothing but praise to heap on the ladies as well as the producers of the video. Now with that said I don’t particularly care for the song but I liked the video. There needs to be more plus size models being used across the board in all forms of media.
