This Friday Trya Banks is going to shed some light on the issue of abuse or Fat-sploitation in different areas. Most of the critics of fat people think that the whole “big is beautiful” movement is just exploitation of individuals that have low self esteem. While I disagree that people like me that have blogs dedicated to larger men and women are using our audiences as punching bags for our own purposes I can slightly agree that some people are heavily involved in fat-sploitation making it very real.
An example of fat-sploitation in the blogshpere is the explosion of spam blogs that mine original content from blogs like mine and others to make money of reselling the content. Most of the individuals behind these sites do not have the passion behind their work or they would not resort to stealing other peoples work for profit. If this post shows up on a spam blog then it will partially prove that there are people willing to exploit fat.
On the opposite side of the spectrum as a black man that knows all to well about discrimination in the South and has a preference on being called a man instead of an “intelligent black man” I can see how terms like “plus size blog”, “plus size fashion”, or any other term that “plus size” has been added to in certain contexts can be viewed as exploitation of a group. I also feel that way of thinking is a bit extreme even for me but I think you can see my point.
Would fat people exploit other fat people? The resounding answer is yes, in my opinion. I am not so naive to think that there are individuals out there that can really care less about helping others or even themselves for that matter as long as what ever fat-functions they are involved with lead to making money. While I think there are many in the fat community that are engaged in fat-sploitation I think that the majority of these actions occur from smaller critics or even supporters that chose to remain silent while actively poisoning anything good that comes out of a community of individuals that are routinely and openly discriminated against.
For some fat-sploitation may be a myth because in their world there is nothing they can relate to that would reveal the problems. For individuals like me I see it as clearly as ever there is rampant abuse, but because being fat is viewed as a lifestyle it is not viewed as important as discrimination against women, children or different ethnic groups. What about for you is fat-sploitation reality or myth?
