Has Plus Size Fashion Finally hit the Mainstream?

A year ago I asked the question Is plus size fashion a niche market? Twelve months ago I did not think that it was because of the influx of new plus size merchants as well as stores like Macy’s and others that had decided to give a considerable portion of their floor space to larger sizes.  Today I ask the question, “Has plus size fashion finally hit mainstream in the fashion industry?”  What do you think about the progress of plus size fashion over the last ten years?  What is available now that you would have never imagined would be?

Just like a year ago I stand by saying that  times have come a long way from the days that when you talked about plus size fashion one of the only names that came up was Lane Bryant.  This caused a lot of ladies and some men to create websites to fill the void left by mainstream department stores.  In the four years that I have been blogging about plus sizes I have seen the industry go from a few goto websites to dozens of websites that are offering everything from casual wear to formal wear.

Websites like IGIGI, Monif C. Plus Sizes, LeeLee’s Valise, Vicki V, and Rosalee Womensize Apparel all have helped to push fashion for larger women to the forefront.  Each has made a mark to let the establishment know that plus size fashions can be stylish and affordable at the same time.  In particular IGIGI and Monif C have made the transition from the web to a brick and mortar location showing that clothing for larger women is making its emergence into the fabric of mainstream apparel.

Plus size fashions appearing on shows such as American Idol and America’s Got Talent as well as plus size celebrities Queen Latifah, Jill Scott, Nikki Blonsky, and others are helping an industry that was once only filled with tent dresses, sweat pants and shorts come out of the shadows and make a splash around the world.
