Helping Victims of the San Diego Fires and Other Natural Disasters

Share

I was just thinking about all of the events surrounding the fires in San Diego, California.  The first thought was that I have a close friend that lives in that area and though she has not lost her home or been seriously injured there was a tense time that I could not reach her that I was very worried.

For those that lost there homes I can relate to how they are feeling right now.  Back in 2001 I lost my home, was forced to move my family to another state, and had to start building my life over from ground zero.   Like most of the individuals in California I was thankful for my life and the health of my family but it was the lowest point of my life trying to rebuild.  Today I don’t think much about the first half of 2001 and the trials I went through but I can use the lessons learned to try and help those that are victims of the disasters that have been happening at an increasing rate in this country.

Items needed to help disaster victims:

  1. Volunteer at local shelters and food banks.  The gift of time is just as important as giving money.
  2. Travel size toiletries are better than the larger sizes especially for those that have to change shelters often.
  3. Laundry detergent is always needed for shelters that will be in use for long periods of time.
  4. Clothing of all sizes especially plus sizes are needed.  Note: donate only clean clothing and clothing that has only been gently used.
  5. If underwear is donated make sure that it is new and still in the package.
  6. Disposable serving and eating utensils.
  7. Calling cards.
  8. Bottled Water.

There are many other goods and services needed such as coats and blankets.  This is important especially for those affected in colder parts of the country.  Do whatever you can every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated by those in their time of need.
