Over the weekend I had the chance to hang out with two friends that have gone through Weight Loss Surgery. One started out over 500lbs the other almost 400lbs. A conversation that came up was the mood extremes that they are going through. On one side there are bouts with anger on the other end uncontrollable crying and depression.
This made me think about WLS and are the benefits of being smaller and making it easier on a persons wardrobe budget are worth going through the hormonal imbalances that are both uncontrollable and unpredictable? So far I have not been able to find much scientific support talking about hormone problems, but I would not expect for it to be that easy meaning that I will keep researching and report on it at another time.
I have a closed head injury that caused me to have uncontrollable seizures for many years. That is the only point of reference that I have to compare to what my friends are going through in there WLS journey. It also brings up these questions to me:
- In the pre-surgery counseling does this subject come up?
- Is there medication that can be subscribed?
- If it is known that the surgery will alter a persons mental state is it ethically responsible to proceed?
- How long after the surgery will a person have problems.
I did not get many answers in this regard from my friends. I respect their privacy enough to not pry, but the question still remains in my mind is having this type of invasive life altering surgery really worth it? What do you think?
