How to dress as you get older

I was just reading Fashion tips for Plus Size ladies over 50 and and started thinking about the amount of plus size women that I see in my daily activities that are older. Some I wonder what they where thinking when they put there look together, while others I am truly impressed with the classy way they look from there head to there feet.

With all the new styles coming out it’s harder for older ladies to find clothing that is not only comfortable but stylish. Though there are several points that I agree with the author of the article on there are a few things that I think would add that extra bit of flare to a mature plus size woman.

  1. Going with trends is not something that goes right for older women. Classic cuts, designs and colors that match your skin tone and body type are extremely mportant for a woman of age.
  2. Formal, Plus Size Clothing, Church Clothing, Evering

  3. Avoid shoes that have a heel of over 2″. This will place less stress on your foot and leg.  It’s all about comfort when your older.
  4. Wear clothing that fits. If what you wear is too big or too small, believe it or not it can actually add years to your look as well as make you look bigger. Have your clothing altered if you need to.
  5. Always wear clothing that is age appropriate. You may have looked good in a micro mini skirt when you where in your twenties but for a woman over 50 it’s not a good idea.
  6. Wearing a bra that fits properly is absolutely cruicial to an older women. If you have larger breasts more so. Go to your favorite specialty lingerie store to be properly measured for your bras.
  7. Though not clothing hair on an older lady can be the difference between looking classic and clumpy. With the different health concerns that come with being older shorter low maintenance styles are the best.
  8. Accessories, accessories, accessories. Scarves, wraps, pendants, belts, earrings, purses, hats on older women stand out more. Be adventuresome in this area without being gaudy.
  9. Makeup is also an area that can’t be ignored. Flesh tone colors that start with a good foundation will give your skin a rejuvenating look instead of just covering it up.

When I really think about it both online and offline there are not that many stores that cater specifically to plus size mature women. The ones that do tend to carry clothing that is mundane and drab. The few that I can think of off the top of my head are have a presence both on and offline and have a pretty good selection.

An alternate view, from a cranky plus size woman in her mid 40s: The older I get, the less interested I am other people telling me what to wear, warning me not to be gaudy or trendy, and insisting that I have to wear makeup to be presentable. Maybe I’m the only person who thinks this way, but given the big chunk of nonconforming baby boomers in their 50s, I would be surprised if I were.

I’m 46. I tend to wear what I like, and not listen to “you should wear this” or “you shouldn’t wear that”.

That said, some of the points are good… I think everyone should wear clothes that make them look and feel confident, and fit is very important toward that. Also, after years of wearing extra-high heels, I’ve decided that in the interest of the health of my legs and feet, I’ll tone it down a bit.

But my hair? NO. My hair is staying long and wavy and wild and amazing. It’s sexy. It’s the sexiest thing I have going for me right now, and *I’m not about to give it up*
