Recently I was on Facebook responding to friend requests when I came across Late at the Met who according to the page is “eccentric fashion and accessories for ladies with curves.”

This led me to Etsy.com which I have known about for years but have not talked about much.  If you do not know what this website is here are the quick details.

Etsy is the world’s handmade marketplace.

Our mission is to empower people to change the way the global economy works. We see a world in which very-very small businesses have much-much more sway in shaping the economy, local living economies are thriving everywhere, and people value authorship and provenance as much as price and convenience. We are bringing heart to commerce and making the world more fair, more sustainable, and more fun.

A transaction is as simple as searching, talking to the shop owner, and making a purchase. Ok now that you know a little lets go through the steps to finding some unique plus size fashions on Etsy.

  1. Register for an account – FYI choose your user name with care this will be the name of the shop if you decide to sell items later.
  2. Confirm your email
  3. Start shopping
The search term I used under the heading handmade products was “plus size clothing”  which rendered over 16.000 results.  There were things from wedding dresses, tops, skirts, vintage items and more.  The best part about it was the items are handmade meaning that there is a high likelihood of anything you purchase you will not see anywhere else.

Etsy gives independent plus size fashion designers a way to sell their designs

One of the dresses I found was in a shop that featured vintage patterns for all sizes.  The best part was the instructions in the description of the dress.  “Why be a cookie cutter – let me make you a wonderful one of a kind custom garment. ALL SIZES AVAILABLE but not every style lends itself to every body type. If you are unsure if this style will fit your frame, ask me. We may be able to come up with a plan and make alterations so it will fit your body type.

Prices throughout Etsy.com range from as little as $1.00 for a pattern to over $2,000 for a custom wedding gown.  While I do not suggest rushing out and spending a lot the easy navigation on the site will allow you to find just about anything and since you will be dealing with an individual usually the designer you can also make an offer on most items.
Because the items are handmade and shop owners can be anywhere in the world the site also offers a way to find merchants in your area.  Other ways to shop include:
Categories
Advanced or customized search
Pounce – jump on new and undiscovered shops
Time machine – recently added items
Colors – if you are looking for a certain color
Featured Sellers – Shop owner interviews
Projects – Etsy experiments
Though categories and the advanced search would be the most helpful in looking for plus size fashions fast if you have some time on your hands you could also browse the other search methods to discover things you may have missed doing a broad search.
What makes Etsy so cool is that it give independent plus size fashion designers a way to sell their designs without having to go through the frustrations involved in trying to get picked up by a major store. If you are looking for something different and you support the independent designer then you need to bookmark Etsy.com.

Etsy is one of my favorite places to shop for clothing and accessories. Some great designers have/had shops on Etsy, ie Jasmine Elder (Jibri) and Jessica Biffi.
