Is Being Fat Considered Cool Now?

I have been reading other blogs and news reports over the past few days and shaking my head at the fact that some people in the mainstream media have declared being big and curvy is now cool. Stuff like this upsets me becuase it seems with the success of people like Queen Latifah and Jennifer Hudson it is now ok to be fat.

The latest addition to the “its cool to be fat” syndrome is the movie Hairspray. John Travolta is putting on the fat suit and dancing with Nikki Blonsky to convince the establishment that fat folks deserve a chance to. The 1988 movie with Divine in the role of that John Travolta is playing and Ricki Lake in the other role, did not make fat cool so what is the difference today?

There have been big people in this country since day one and the fight for size acceptance has been raging for many decades. In the years that I have been blogging I have seen improvements but there is still a long way to go. The scars that have been inflicted on people of size are not going to go away after a declaration or two from people in the national media.

I am overjoyed that people of size are getting recognition for there talents, what I am not happy about is that the accolades come with riders such as “plus size actress, bigger comedian, large singer, full figured writer. Why can’t people of size in the national spotlight just be talented individuals.

As a fat black man who is a blogger, the success of my blog didn’t come because I was fat or because I was black. It has come from me writing on a daily basis and getting feedback from readers. I’m not cool because I am fat either. There are those that like me some that don’t and it has nothing at all to do with my size.

I honestly don’t think that there will be any dancing in the streets after the announcements by some smaller individuals that being fat is now cool. My size is not a fad that is a part of pop culture that will go out like last seasons colors.

I am here to stay as is and those that don’t like it I guess they are going to be in a bad way knowing that when they wake up us fat folks are still doing the same things we have been doing for years without there approval.

On the Other Hand

While you are traveling around, if you are browse through a historic travel store , you’ll still find the ages-old accessories like time machine and time travel devices. It’s amazing how it all transformed into the modern era. Historic travel lodge got replaced with luxurious hotels and changed the way tourists plan their tour.

My thoughts were very similar to yours, particularly since I can recall a very similar take when the first big-screen version of Hairspray was released in the late 1980s.

  1. [...] I need to rewatch the 1988 version of Hairspray, and possibly look up the coverage. I remember the movie was a big hit, then, without any need to put name stars in drag. And while I’m seeing a whole lot of praise for how this movie is such a positive force for plus people, I can’t help but think of what happened with Ricki Lake, who went from plus size force of nature to skinny talk show host catering to the narrow minded and superstitious of North America. Interestingly, Ricki Lake will have a cameo in the new version of Hairspray. I have to wonder – and worry – what advice she would give to Nikki Blonsky. There’s an enormous pressure on women outside the norm in Hollywood, and let’s face it, despite the fact that they’re the world center of entertainment, when it comes to their perceptions of women as characters, they’re some of the least imaginative people in the world out there. If Nikki were to lose weight for career reasons alone, rather than from some other organic change, it would indeed be a loss, much as the impact of the first Hairspray movie was quickly negated.
