Is Mo’Nique a good role model for plus size black women?

In reading my daily news feeds I came across a opinion poll on The Daily Journal asking has Mo’Nique, “sparked a revolution among heavy African-American women”. I don’t know about a revolution but I do know before she did Mo’Nique’s F.A.T Chance and wrote her book women of size in the black community where not as vocal and as visible as they are now in the mainstream.
I have had the pleasure of meeting many positive plus size black women in my time of blogging for plus sizes. I don’t know if it is becasue I am black or that I am making my own attempt to give them a sounding board or a voice that casued us to cross paths. To me they are role models in there own right. I met each of them before Mo’Nique shined the spotlight on larger black women and for me its been a pleasure getting to know each of them.
Aja B. Stubbs - Founder and editor of the ezine Belle Noir. The idea for Belle Noir came from when the plus size magazine Mode folded and became an online only source for plus size women. Though in its early stages being a sometime contributor to this rising ezine and knowing Aja has been a pleasure. Currently plans to take Belle Noir to the next level are underway so expect more soon.
Latisha Williams - A plus size model/actress/jewelry artist and more. I met her through a yahoo group before my blog was born. She is a very earthy woman that is serious about her work and representing women of size in the world of modeling. Curently she is entering the Ms. American Elegance Pagent representing the state of Ohio. Monif C - I had the pleasure of meeting this vibrant young lady a few months before she launched Monif C. Plus Sizes and though I don’t speak with her as much as I used to watching the rise of her clothing line has been a pleasure not only for women of color but plus size women in general. I expect to see fantastic things from her in the future.
Encountering ladies like these three and seeing what Mo’Nique is doing has me thinking that for sure there are some very positive plus size women of color that whether they realize it or not are serving as role models to a lot of people. What do you think is Mo’Nique a good roll model for plus size black women?

My answer is ” She is a Positive role model for every woman of size.” There are a lot of small business that are Size Positive that have been flourishing for years, small clothing companies like me http://www.RosaleeWomensizeApparel.com can now recieve more attention because Monique tells women to look your best, buy proper fitting undergarments, you are beautiful. I am so proud of the movement she has started, I have met a lot of wonderful women thru the Fabulous and Thick website.
I have always believed Plus size women are more beautiful, when we put on high heels and and a dress or skirt that fits thru the hips and has a flounce at the hemline-we are awesome when we walk into a room. I hope Monique continues the F.A.T. Chance competitions, which also showcases various women and their struggles, their triumphs, and skills, and of course those fabulous fashions that were presented. The world is paying attention-I am noticing the various countires that are banning models who are too thin-The world is a big place and there are a lot of people now who are Thicker. Unfortunately, I fear that Mo’nique’s personality may get in the way of her beautiful message. I’m still waiting for more women of color who /don’t/ have to rely on being “loud” to get the job done. It’s already hard as it is to be a plus size woman, let alone being a black plus size woman, without people believing that you’re aggressive / loud / obnoxious.
I’m not a fan of her comedy (which is a whole ‘nother topic), but I am a fan of any plus size woman that gets our message out.

Monique is a lady being loud is what got her foot in the door in today’s society you have to be aggressive or else you will end up with nothing and low self esteem. I’m not saying be a cusser or wear something that is too sexy. All I am saying is know who you are, and what you want to bring to the table. This is not a skinny Vs fat. Thanks for stopping by. One of the things that I liked in the beginning with Mo’Nique’s comedy was the loudness now years later it has worn thin. I love the other work that she is doing I just don’t care for her comedy act any longer.
