Is Mo’Nique Having Weight Loss Surgery?

On this blog anything about Mo’Nique is very popular.  Several ladies have commented on when or if there will be another season of Mo’Nique’s F.A.T. Chance.  If the rumors are true then I can say that there will probably not be another season.  The celebrity blog Media Takeout is reporting that Mo’Nique may be recovering from Gastric Bypass Surgery.

If this is true then everything that Mo’Nique has been telling women over the past few years has been has been compromised.  Thinking about the conversations that I have had with women that have had WLS it is not an overnight process.  She had to be in talks with doctors for at least a year, meaning that is possible that during the taping of the last cycle of F.A.T. Chance in Paris she was in consultation to have the surgery.

Once again at this point it’s just a rumor, but if proven to be true it will amount to yet another slap in the face of fat people by one of our own.  Star Jones was a champion for size acceptance then fought for years to cover up her surgery before coming clean last year.  If the same thing is going on with Mo’Nique her credibility in the eyes of millions of ladies and a few men like myself will be shot.

Mo’Nique If she had WLS for health reasons I am all for that but if she was going to do it she should not have been on the size acceptance band wagon when inside she did not like her own body image.  It is sad that she has reached the peak of her career in defending fat girls everywhere only to not even believe her own words.  With this news one can only think what was really going through her mind when she was at the auditions seeing all the lovely and luscious big women that idolize her.  Was she repulsed by what she saw?  Was she shocked to the point that it lead her to walk the road of WLS?

Only time will tell and as the article says if we see her come out this summer with a new book and a new slimmer look that will put just about all rumors to rest.  If such is the case then everything related to her and her activities will be promptly removed from my blog.  I can only hope that it is just a rumor.

It always mystifies me when fat women act betrayed if a plus-size star has wls. even skinny women often hold a distorted idea of their body image. Why is it so hard to believe that MoNique would too? It doesn’t mean she was disgusted by contestants on FAT Chance, and it doesn’t make her message of loving yourself regardless of size a lie–it means that she has deep, personal image problems and you don’t know what they’re rooted in. We’ve got to stop expecting perfection from each other! I’m a proud 220 pounds. I look good and I know it. I would never excoriate another overweight woman for making that decision–that’s like beating up on someone who has a psychological problem.

    Emme,

You make a good point. My issue with it is why say one thing in public and do another in private. If she wants to have the surgery that is her right just like any other person but she should not promote the things that she does if she has such an issue with body image.

why be offended about her having the procedure, she is a very beautiful woman with or without the procedure , but if all the bbws would be honest me included havent we all thought about being slimmer and wondering what it would be like . i do , someone who has never had a weight problem does’nt know how it is . so be happy for her if she is doing this and pray for a good recovery.

It’s just that there are so few BBWs in the public eye and fewer still that send the message that it IS possible to be plus size and confident, successful, beautiful and O.K. with one’s body. When someone like Mo’Nique or, recently, Queen Latifah, shift and begin extolling weight loss, a lot of women who found inspiration and strength through their example are left alone again.

I don’t begrudge anyone’s weight loss, I really don’t, but when someone who has made an effort to spread the message of size acceptance (and carved a career niche from it) suddenly takes measures to ensure weight loss, it’s hard not to feel a little bit betrayed.

I hope this is not true, no only woman but men love her just the way she is. But I agree with the comments if this is true then monique did not believe her own words. She was just lying to us. Wow, we dont have a lot of us in the spot light, this is sad, beyonce did the same thing, talk about loving your curves and then turn around and lose all that weight. Why do black women let hollywood change them. Monique is going to lose alot of fans. I hope this is not tture. If so we will all consder her a PHONY!!!!!!!!!!

I hope that Monique is not having Gastric Bypass, but if she is, then that is her business. I too, am a plus-size woman, and I wouldn’t want the whole world to turn on me just because I decided to do something that was going to help keep me alive! I believe in losing weight to stay healthy, but I think that the gastric bypass has provide a dangerous “quick fix” to losing weight. I feel it’s more important to develop good fitness and eating habits because if you don’t do that, you’ll spend all of that money and then end up gaining the weight back anyway!

i feel that if mo’nique has the same image issues that i have, then she needs to be straight up about it. that’s what being a comedian is all about, being raw, and open. i don’t care what anyone else says, i have supported mo’nique by buying her books, watching and buying her shows and she has often time been a coach to me, when i’m feeling less than fab because of my weight. in fact, i have the nude pic from the last fat change in my cubicle on my vision board. mo’nique and that picture represents pure confidence, and that’s what i strive for…it’s ok to be human, but as an entertainer you are on the front line, building a fanbase that needs to know that you are exactly who you say you are…if mo’nique is having surgery for cosmetic reasons then she has lost me as a fan.

I agree with mizzsoulsista, that is if the rumor is true. Because why promote being all this proud to be heavy nonsense and you are really not. If she is doing it for medical reason then you have to do what you have to do. If she is doing IT because society deems so then she is not being true to who she says she is and to me that is FALSE ADVERTISEMENT!!!!

Ladies, why do we get in such an uproar over what someone else, especially celebrities choose to do with their life? Are we so easily influenced that we need their approval in order to feel good about ourselves. I myself and overweight by at least 85 lbs, but never have I ever thought that I should EMbraCE my size. Plain and simple, the bottom line is about being HEALTHY! All of the shouting I’m FAT and I’m Proud, in my lonely opinion is ridiculous. Are you proud to be placing your life in danger as well as possibly making your husband a widow and your children motherless? Are you proud of the fact that you get out of breath when you get out there and try to play with your children? Are you proud of the taunting and humiliation that your kids receieve because you won’t take the necessary steps to improve your health - choosing to EMbraCE it with such pride? Come on now…..why can’t we be HONEST with ourselves and admit that being overweight is NOT healthy. Some of us are obese and it leads to a lot of hinderances in life. Some people questions why she is not doing it the old fashion way oif diet and exercise. First…how many on here have tried and FAILED at what you are questioning about her? Probably about um….100%. As well, some people simply can not lose weight no matter how much they try. Let’s stop being so judgemental when we have carried the burden of being judged ourselves.

You don’t read much, do you, Utopia? Start with http://www.junkfoodscience.blogspot.com Educate yourself on the protective effects of fat regarding catastrophic medical event survival, longterm survival period, the futility of diets, and the misreporting (fueled by big pharmaceutical companies that make billions off diet drugs) about fat and health.

I’m sorry you can’t embrace your size but you know what? Since there’s pretty much *nothing* you can do to get rid of it that is proven to be either successful or permanent much less safe, and zero evidence that losing weight for a fat person conveys the same “benefits” of natural thinness (actually the physiology of a fat person who’s dieted and exercised themselves thin - before the five year mark when they’re sure to have gained it back) their bodies are physiologically in starvation mode. It’s dangerous. Try this for a big education in one little article - http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/08/health/08fat.html Anyway like I was saying, since there’s nothing you can do that will guarantee you *any* health benefits and is far likelier to harm you in the long run, why NOT embrace your body? It’s how you are made. So what? People come in all shapes and sizes. And they all deserve dignity and respect. By the way, here’s a Public Service Announcement…from your body. http://peggynature.wordpress.com/2008/03/09/a-public-service-announcement-fromyour-body/

    Annie,

I am not quite sure who you are actually talking to in your reply but I will assume it is me since I am the author. I already know about the things you refer to “fat regarding catastrophic medical event survival, longterm survival period, the futility of diets, and the misreporting (fueled by big pharmaceutical companies that make billions off diet drugs) about fat and health.” But since this is a fashion and accessory blog and not a size acceptance blog when I write about these subjects its to bring light to the bigger picture.

If you stay on task to what I actually wrote then you will realize its about the perception of what was promoted to other individuals about acceptance of their body by someone who told them to embrace their body then is possibly having a risky procedure.

Mr. Johnson, no, it wasn’t addressed to you - it was addressed to a poster above called “Utopia” something, who would never consider embracing her size, and states that fat is unhealthy, period.

And I followed this here from a size acceptance blog, so yeah, my stance is coming from that direction lol. But I liked your post :)

why do people want too have themselves cut up then they start feeling bad about all the scars instead of the weight. don’t make no sense , just eat different and work out. even if it its a health problem I know cardio diets that hospitals put you on before heart surgery that works if you are over weight. rich people run out of things to buy and if you all notice it don’t matter if they big or small they all start cutting up or blowing up or adding on till they all look terrible, make up and the works to cover up what they had done. ITS THERE BODIES and if THEY don’t LIKE what GOD GAVE THEM -then let them spend there money on surgery instead of trust funds for kids and grand kids.

So let me guess she had to do it for health reasons?? RIGHT, after all them tears and fake fat movies and expensive clothes on her website, not to mention the love urself comments she always make - please don’t let me forget the cookbook and the Skinny bitches are Evil book she put out there. Money sure can change people. Wonder if her husband was getting too worked out when working out. but whatever, everytime she open her big mouth -all words now will be a BIG PHAT LIE -The TV show should sue her ass for being fake like that. (no wonder it didn’t get regular TV airtime -they already knew). If she would have appeared on celebrity fit camp then I would feel different, but the girl is fake as hell and the pics show. Since when was she ever ashamed to show her body -RIGHT she haven’t reached the sexy she just paid umpteen thousands of dollars for… LOL to her LOL honey…:)

I don’t think its a big deal that she is getting this surgery! Why because at the end of the day its about health! We all can be proud of being plus size women , because for most of us that is how we alway have been, and after years of putting ourselves down we rantto be proud. We could stand to lose weight! Not for the look of it, but for health reason alone! I’m not saying try and get in a size 6 or even an 8, but to have you BMI be under 30! I may not be getting any surgeries, but I am taking a stand on being a healthier me for the long run! I want to live, I want to be healthy, I want children.

Just because we are plus size does not mean we have to be unhealthy. To lose 10-20% of out body weight will not make us un proud plus size women. Guess what?! I am 5′10 size 16/18 and weigh 242lbs. In my mind I the hottest thing smoking, but I know down the line this 242 lb can leave me open to heat disease, high blood pressure and a list of health problems. So Yes I want to drop 50 to 60lbs and I still be be a confident and sexy plus size woman! Please check out Club cushions for more to come!!!

I find it absolutely appalling how women can be so fickle. Are you Mo’Nique? Do you attend her drs visits? Are you privvy to her health issues (whether physical or mental)? Life is all about change… everyone has the perogative to do what is in their best interest. I myself am a BBW Erotic Glam model… While I don’t follow Mo’Nique as some mystical icon, I do appreciate the work she’s done, the confidence she has helped others achieve and her ability to live according to her OWN views. Whether she has WLS or not in my opinion does NOT discredit her accomplishments. It simply shows her as a woman who values herself regardless of her size and the views of others. Most women that admire her will not fault her for doing what she feels is best… call her phoney or a liar… they will understand and wish nothing but happiness and health in whatever she chose to do. Attacking someones character based on how much they weigh is EXACTLY what we’ve all been fighting against… so why perpetuate the BS? Opinions are like… you know the saying… everyone has one… but before publicly attacking someone’s character… LOOK IN THE MIRROR and recognize your own shortcomings and put that energy towards bettering yourself… not tearing someone else down.

    Just some food for thought…
“I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do. That is character! ” ~Theodore Roosevelt
