Over the last week there has been a lot of talk about the Cacique lingerie television ad produced by Lane Bryant and the discrimination by ABC whose parent company is Disney and FOX. One side of the argument is that the mainstream media treated Lane Bryant differently from straight size lingerie companies like Vctoria Secret. On the other side the networks are saying they rejected the ads which were set to air during American Idol because they are too racy and show “too much cleavage”
The video showing on YouTube right now has reached over 2 million views and has shown another example of the level of discrimination that exists in the media in terms of controlling the images shown to viewers. I realize that on one level it is just business and Lane Bryant may have done things differently, but you can’t blame them for rejecting the suggestion that they show the model from the neck up. Anyone in advertising knows that the entire point of doing television ads is to show the product. In this case the product is the Cacique bra and to show only from the neck up not only is a slap in the face of plus models but it defeats the purpose of the ad by not showing the lingerie.
ABC, FOX, and other media outlets I have one suggestion to you. You may not want to see fat people but fat people are part of the viewership on your networks and the people who spend money patronizing the companies who advertise during your programming. Right now Lane Bryant is in the middle of its buy 2 get 1 free free sale that is a successful program without help from television ads. Ask my wife and other ladies who plan their lingerie shopping around sales like this.
Sounds to me like the ad executives at Lane Bryant are smarter than the ad managers at ABC and FOX. LB is looking to increase profits and brand loyalty while the media outlets are looking to discriminate against fat people on the sly.

I thought it was awesome, the video, not the censorship.

I thought the video was great as well. It just goes to show you that discrimination still exists.
