Plus Size Fashion Designer Anna Scholz Debuts Online

Posted on October 28, 2009 by Glen Johnson

Hundreds of plus-size fashion stores and more Ultimate Plus-Size Shopping List!

Yesterday marked the beginning of fans of Anna Scholz’s designer plus size clothing ability to shop hassle-free from the just launched Anna Scholz website.

Newly launched last spring, Anna’s plus size womens wear website is updated, fresh and stylish.  On the “About Anna” page, shoppers can learn about Anna’s life, her design inspirations, and her favorite pieces in the collection.  They also can read her personal blog and find out the latest on the busy designer and her studio.

While browsing through the website I was impressed by the fantastical prints and colors.  In addition, multiple worlds and eras comingle in the collection through Anna’s trademark incorporation of vintage styles and prints into her designs.  Though some of the pieces are a bit pricey it is becoming the norm these days to pay for quality garments.  Of the dresses some were as low 175BP (British Pounds) or 285USD (US Dollars) which factored in over time actually is cheaper than buying more lesser quality pieces.

Retro for Today

Past and future mingle in Anna’s designs which often combine retro details in fresh new silhouettes   In her latest collection, old school 80s video games are slyly referenced in the pattern of the Pac-Man 50s jacket. Her 70s style maxi wrap dress, 60s era crepe flare trousers and 40s-inspired crepe origami wrap dress all further evoke magical “Wonderland” themes of exploring new terrain or slipping through a portal into a bygone era.

Though she loves to play with vintage elements, Anna always maintains a look which is sleek and modern.  She often employs unusual color palettes or embellishments to update a retro-flavored style or print.  For example, the bright yellow of the lily print and the fanciful lollipop colors of the rainbow striped flower print translate as urbane and edgy against a black silk ground.

The paisley print on silk radiates playfulness and sophistication through a fresh, modern color palette of brights mixed with of-the-moment neutral tones. Likewise, the nude and plum palette of the zebra stripes on silk georgette is an on-trend and unexpected departure from the usual animal prints.

Anna’s Pac-Man print coat puts a grown-up spin on the current rage for computer graphic patterns while also referencing silhouettes from the 50s and 60s.  Likewise, flirty frills give Anna’s latest trench coats an updated look that’s part Casablanca, part Carrie Bradshaw.

Overall Anna Scholz delivers some great pieces for the Fall/Winter for plus size women around the world.  If you are looking for items that are different and make a bold statement I strongly suggest that you check the website out.  Even if you don’t make a purchase initially take a few moments out to complete the survey that pops up.  Your feeback will help them make the website and your shopping experience overall better.

I guess I’m just not feeling it this year. I like the styles per se but the patterns turn me off — they remind me of the patterns a bunch of us were complaining about at LB last year.

When it comes to patterns I feel that way about lots of designers, but being new to Anna Scholz I was intrigued enough to start watching her more closely. Besides I think most designers drop the ball with Fall patterns anyway. The usually brighten things up in the Spring

I agree, I love the cuts but the patterns have to go. I wouldn’t wear these patterns if I was thin, so why should I wear them if I’m fat? It’s not like they make you look any thinner. Plus I find her things pretty expensive.

Many of us–at least those of us who can afford it– have clothes in our closets stamped with these names. Even though the percentage of people buying these clothes may be very small, fashion designers still wield tremendous influence on what we wear and how we wear it.
