Surviving the Chaos Known as Black Friday

Posted on November 16, 2009 by Glen Johnson

Hundreds of plus-size fashion stores and more Ultimate Plus-Size Shopping List!

Reflecting on last year’s Black Friday post in which it was stated the average person spends $716.00 during the holidays I wonder with all of the economy woes in the world today in particular in the US will people still spend that much per person.

In the US with credit crunches, bank bailouts, and other financial problems many merchants have begun their holiday sales back in October hoping to get a jump on others but we all know that the day after Thanksgiving in the United States is the biggest shopping day of the year.  If you are one of the diehards looking to get your shop on here are a few tips to help you out.

  1. Spend less than the average the thought means more than the cost
  2. The economy hit many stores hard don’t be afraid to negotiate with sales clerks especially on big ticket items
  3. Map out the stores you will shop and set a time limit for your shopping excursion.
  4. Stay home and eat breakfast while watching CNN. (That is what my family and I will be doing)
  5. Pump up Cyber Monday to those that normally do Black Friday.

As stated over a year ago their is no magic bullet to prevent people from going into debt during the holiday shopping season.  Regardless their will be millions of shoppers braving the elements to find so-called bargains on this day of ritualistic spending.  My suggestion for those allergic to chaotic crowds to tune into blogs like Full Figure Plus to learn about Cyber Monday activity in which you can shop for some of the same items and have them delivered to your front door.

My days of Black Friday shopping are long over. I now take Black Friday off work, to come day from the day before. I am a cyber Monday shopper! Since there are no babies to buy for, the neices and nephews are very grown, and family can fend for themselves, I am like you Glenn, I’ll be having breakfast w/CNN!
