The Star Jones Saga Continues
Star Jones has gone from being a favorite celebrity of many plus size men and women to the dog house. The latest in a story that is getting worse by the day is Star skipping out on a speaking engagement for the size acceptance organization Full And Fabulous after demanding more money from the organization and keeping the money they had sent her previously.
Celebrity blog TMZ.com has the actual contracts that where signed between Star and Full and Fabulous. Her comments about keeping the money which is reported to be around $17,000 is that she is not legally obligated to return the money. What makes it even worse is that there where additional fees charged to the credit card of organization president, Sharon Dumas Pugh without prior authorization.
Letters from the teenagers that Star was supposed to speak to are on the front of the Full and Fabulous website. The one statement that caught my attention and sums up how sad this situation is:
“We worked hard, sold dinners and fruit smoothies to help raise the money to bring you to Detroit. I am now 18 years old and when I become successful, Ms. Jones, I will not forget where I came from like you seem to have done. On your web page you say “to much that is given, much is expected”. Knowing the hardship of overweight girls, we expected a lot more support from you than what you were willing to give, or did you forget what it was like to be overweight already?”
There are not many organizations in existence that deal with the self esteem of teenage girls let alone the issues of a plus size teenage girl. For that reason alone Star should have spoke to these young ladies to give them hope from someone in a higher position outside of their community. Instead they received a lesson in legal business practice 101. Because of the clause in the contract that states if the deposit is not paid in full by a certain date she has the right to keep any money given thus far says it all. I know she won’t lose any sleep and will not even think how she has affected this young ladies but she should.
What is so hard to swallow about the actions of Star is that at one time she was a champion for size acceptance which is one of the reasons that the organizers of the event chose her to speak. If she commands $25k for an appearance I don’t think that she is hurting for money. This situation reeks of greed and very little compassion of the teenagers Full And Fabulous is supporting. Though Sharon Dumas Pugh has recieved a judgment against Star she has yet to collect. The organization is experiencing some financial struggles as a result donations are needed to help out. Check out there website and if you see think it is something that you would like to support show it by giving to their cause.

This is truly horrible and disappointing news. Perhaps Star lost a little bit of her heart along with the pounds she shed. To disappoint all those young girls, who were looking forward so much for her to speak it simply mean. Why were they looking at Start anyway to promote size acceptance to them? There are so many other true plus size women who would do a better job, women who need not resort to drastic weight loss, but accept themselves for who they are. People like Queen Latifah and Mo’nique for example.

Sarah,
To my understanding they chose Star because she could relate to where they are and could tell stories of success regardless of size.
In the end it was truly low how she treated those young ladies.

I’m so disappointed by this turn of events. Whatever Star’s legal obligations, it would’ve been kind for her to do the event anyway based on the monies she had received, then work out the details of the balance afterward, so as to not disappoint the girls who worked so hard to raise money for her appearance. A charitable spirit seems to be lacking here. It’s too bad Queen Latifah or Jill Scott weren’t available to make that appearance. I suspect it would’ve turned out quite differently!

I agree she should have been able to work something out for the good of the kids. Jill Scott would have been a good choice as well.
