The State Of The Plus-Size Community

Lately Full Figure Plus has been focusing on a few specific areas of the plus community.  Today it is time to look at the plus size community as a whole to see after almost six years of blog posts what has changed what has stayed the same and what dare I say has gotten worse.  When it comes to the big picture I think for the most part things have gotten better and that we have a lot to cheer about but that is not to say there is not plenty of room for improvement.

The Good

  • Events like Full Figured Fashion Week™ and The International Fuller Woman Expo are growing in size and influence
  • More relevant plus size fashion blogs are hitting the Internet
  • It is easier than ever for plus size fashion to be found regardless of where people live
  • Mainstream fashion is warming up to plus modeling
  • Plus size actress Mo’Nique won and academy award

The Bad

  • People like Karl Lagerfield and size Nazi’s are still looking to bash fat people and make money off us at the same time
  • American plus models get more work overseas than they do on US soil
  • Many plus size ladies still concentrate on the number on the tag instead of wearing clothes that fit their unique shape
  • ABC and FOX would not air a Cacique lingerie ad featuring a plus model in lingerie
  • Fat bashing is still alive and well and should be classified as a hate crime

The Unclassified

  • “fatorexia” – a distorted view of knowing if your fat or not chronicled in the book Fatorexia: What Do You See When You Look in the Mirror I have to think about this one and make up my mind after reading it
  • Macy Gray will debut a plus-size clothing line called “HUMPS”
  • Plus-Size celebrities like Beth Ditto And Chaka Kahn had to debut their clothing lines in the UK instead of in the US
  • It took controversy for plus models Crystal Renn and Ashely Graham to be noticed by the national media
  • CBS will air “Mike and Molly” a show about a fat couple going to a weight loss support group (eyes rolling in the back of my head)

When it comes down to it many of the items listed above could be interchanged between the categories and the bad section could most certainly be expanded, but that is not the point of this exercise kiddies.  The point is to shine light on an undeserved niche and to show even in the face of adversity there are still some diamonds in the rough and as usual Full Figure Plus will be their to report on it.
