Total Fitness: Why Dieting Is NOT The Answer – Week 1

Today on Full Figure Plus we are going to start on a series that will take us over the next few weeks to go deep into health and fitness and why dieting is not the way to go when it comes to getting fit and staying fit.  For those of us including myself who have lost weight in one way or another only to find it again it is not a situation in which we did anything wrong but we took the wrong road to reach our destination.  Additionally, I would like to thank Bill for providing me with the inspiration to start this series.

Total fitness is about bringing your mind and body together to be fit.  Fitness is not about losing weight its not about losing at all it is about winning.  Winning the race over a long period of time not reaching a goal of dropping some pounds only to celebrate by going out to eat.

This week I will spell out the overview of the plan and reveal each of the parts as we get deeper into the series.  During this journey I encourage all Full Figure Plus readers to join in and share your stories of getting and staying fit.

Disclaimer:  Let me state up front these are my ideas and my ideas alone.  I will share my story but when it comes to any suggestion of anything dietary or physical be smart and consult your doctor, period.

Lets get the obvious things out if the way first so we can start this journey with a clean slate:

  1. Physical exercise only has short term effects
  2. Admit you have a problem (the problem being not fit)
  3. To go where you have never been, you must be what you have never been, and do what you have never done

Moving on there are seven areas, steps if you may, towards the goal of becoming totally fit.  Remember, this is not any type of diet plan with the goal for us to lose weight.  The goal is to become as fit as possible.  Dropping pounds would be a bonus at best because I am looking at this journey as more of a mind and lifestyle change that will last a lifetime.

7 Steps To Total Fitness

  1. Do not neglect your body.  This means absolutely no starvation diets.  Period.
  2. Take pain in your quest, because when you get started it is not going to be easy to finish
  3. Be absorbed in your task.  Make it a part of your daily routine
  4. Once you are headed in the right direction people will see your progress there will be no need to ask
  5. Pay close attention to the things around you and how they change as you become more fit
  6. Be resolute in your promise to become fit, especially when things get tough and doubt creeps in
  7. Ensure success by choosing to be fit instead of giving in to peer pressure

I am sure by now you have noticed none of the total fitness steps include going to the gym, dieting, counting calories or anything else typically associated with weight loss.  The reason why is I am not thinking of losing anything but gaining everything through becoming as fit as possible.  In other words, total fitness is not about intentions it is about intentional choices.  The choice during this series is to become fit.  How? Over the next few weeks it will all be revealed.

  1. Great article. I have been up and down, and this time, I really evaluated my life and what I wanted it to look like. Being fit won’t provide happiness or joy, it won’t make me a better person. Once I came to the place of truly loving who I already am, and seeing myself as beautiful, no matter what my size, I was able to make a conscious choice. I am choosing fitness because the long-term benefits far outweigh the short-term pleasure of engorging myself with food. I am choosing fitness because someday I will have children and I want to have the strength and evergy to play with them each day. I am making the conscious choice each morning to eat what my body needs, and to incorporate daily exercise.
