Who is Lil Mama?

Most of you remember me writing about expanding my search in looking for plus size fashion in other countries. While going through invitations to my mostly ignored MySpace page I was lead to Lilmama. Not only is Mama a plus size diva but in my mind a celebrity. Hopefully she will be kind enough to be a regular contributor to this blog. Be sure to check out the store and the lil mama blog as well. For those that are curious here are a few facts about Mamma and Lilmama.

  • Lil’ Mama started in mid 2005 after I quit my job as Executive Producer of Australia’s #1 rating national radio show.
  • Have worked in radio for almost 10 years now, and interviewed people like Brittany Spears, Harrison Ford, Keanu Reeves, Elijah Wood, 50 Cent, Jessica Alba, Good Charlotte and Bon Jovi
  • I started Lil’ Mama because being a size 16 girl, could never find beautiful clothes to wear to red carpets and special events.
  • After researching the market I realized that there was a real lack of quality, well cut, glamorous clothes for women sizes 12 and upwards, that have a designer style and finish to them.
  • Lil’ Mama has sizes US 4-22, uses lots of Swarovski Crystal and is Australian Made.
  • Even in our smaller sizes, our clothes are constructed with special panels and tailoring that help flatten, trim and flatter the curvy female shape, as well as elongated hemlines.
  • I went to the US to launch last year, showed in Union Square San Fran and Crash Mansion LA (Tommy Lee and Dave Navaros club) it was a huge success for us, with media from the US, Europe, and Japan attending.
  • Launched our site www.lilmama.com.au at the beginning of 08, it’s not just a boutique but a community created to support and encourage women of all shapes, sizes and ages.
  • After going to the US I am a regular contributor, with my own column “Ask Mama” which I started in Jan this year for Plus Model Mag
  • Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, is a fan of our clothes, it has also been worn by some fab US plus size modes including Maggie B and Suz Lyons.
  • What’s next for Lil’ Mama… Going back to the US in the second half of 08.

I am also a passionate advocate for fashion being able to empower rather than enslave, I believe all women have the right to look beautiful, as size like age is just a number, and that women should be encouraged to celebrate their curves rather than curse them!

    The Lil’ Mama mantra…

“Every woman has the right to look & feel beautiful! Every woman should have access to clothes that make her feel glamorous.
Lil’ Mama is a clothing label made especially for the “that woman” in all of us”.
