Will Calorie Counts on Resturant Menus Actually Work?
The latest news on the so called war on obesity is a new law New York that requires all resturants with over 14 locations to list the calorie count of the menu items. Personally when it comes to getting fast food the whole point of it is getting it fast. If this new law catches on nationally not only will I be faced with mentally crunching prices, but I will also have to get my calculator out to see if the #1 with cheese no onions fits in my daily calorie plan.
Two things that I see coming from the requirement of resturants to list calories is that companies will lie about the numbers on certain items to drive sales and they will pass the cost of having to print new menus on to the customers. I guess that means that in the news right after the report on the latest rise in the price of crude oil will be the chart stating that beef is now at a record high price.
With the health and fitness craze that has gripped America there most certainly will be individuals dancing in the streets right now thinking of all the calorie conversations they will have with their friends. Then there are people like me that if I want to go get a triple burger with cheese, spicy fries and a milk shake that is what I will get. The only thing the calorie count menu will do for me is to serve as a source of reading while eating in the case I don’t have a book or newspaper.
Will knowing what the calorie of certain items make people more likely to try new low calorie products? Probably. Will it make a huge difference in the overall weight of a person by watching calories on a fast food menu? Probably not. While I am sure that there are many stories similar to Jared who lost his weight eating low fat Subway sandwiches, I just don’t think in the big picture requiring restaurants to print calorie information is going to stop people from getting what they want.

Hi Glen
What a great article, I mean can you imagine everyone that is dieting will have a heart attach when they order after reading the calorie count on that meal. I hope they don’t bring that in Australia. Althought it isn’t a bad idea - that way you wouldn’t have to sit there analyzing the whole menu to see what you can and can’t have. They make it simple - eat the stuff with the least calories.

Kathy,
I agree it is a good idea but I for one hope that it doesn’t catch on nationally. There will be some people to get the items with the least calories but others will naturally gravitate to the items with the highest calorie count.

I believe that calorie counting work - BUT (you knew that was coming right?) only if 1) you stick to it and 2) as long as you stick to it, you are ‘on a mission’ and are therefore a bit more determined to loose weight any way.
Great Blog.

Yes you are correct I did see it coming and yes I agree being on a mission and sticking to your guns is just as important as the calorie counting.
