Will SKORCH Magazine Fill The Void in The World of Plus Size Fashion Magazines?
Posted on September 04, 2009 by Glen L Johnson
Not long ago I like everyone else saw the debut of SKORCH Magazine as a breath of fresh air in the world of publications for plus size fashion on the Internet. What I liked the most about the magazine is it did not look like the typical only ezine. Not only was time and effort put in but the most important part money was put behind the project to give it a professional polish I see lacking in many plus size electronic publications. The magazine started with a bang then disappeared.
I am not sure what happened or why but SKORCH Magazine is back with that same professionalism that set them apart in the first place with a new twist. Come December 1, 2009 you will be able to get SKORCH on the newsstands! Since the demise of Belle, BBW, Mode and others in print there has been a huge void in the world of magazines dedicated to plus size fashion. Online magazines and blogs like Full Figure Plus did our best to fill the gap but even I have to admit there is no way to replace what having a physical product on the shelf brings to the table with an electronic facsimile.
SKORCH is a magazine for trendy and fashionable women sizes 12+ who crave a magazine that looks and feels like every other fashion magazine, but also offers fashion commentary and advice for a plus-size woman. SKORCH is for plus-size women who want trendy plus-size fashion, beauty tips, celeb style in plus-size, and in-depth interviews. We are the translators of “skinny” fashion to plus-size.
SKORCH will be offered in print starting Dec 1 09, and will run bi-monthly.
SKORCH is a visual experience offering a digital magazine and a traditional magazine with layout, ads, fashion spreads, and more. Dynamic advertising quenches the readers thirst to purchase trendy and cool plus-size products.
All of that packed into a bi-monthly magazine at the unheard of price of $25 a year! I cannot think of one single fashion magazine on the shelf today that can be purchased for one dollars an issue based on the subscription price and for SKORCH to offer these kinds of savings to their potential readers is fantastic. Honestly, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be a subscriber.
Flipping thorough the min-mag available through December will give you a glimpse into the world of SKORCH and the mission they are trying to accomplish. Filled with advertising from off the beaten path designers I see the magazine serving as a launching pad for many in the plus community while at the same time serving it readership in a new and uplifting way. What I don’t see and I am jumping with excitement over it is the feel of current magazines that treat plus size women as an afterthought instead of the focus. SKORCH does a great job of showcasing plus size models which means that plus women will see plus women wearing the clothing which will cut down on the “I wonder if this comes in my size” argument.
Ultimately I do not know if SKORCH Magazine will completely fill the void in plus size fashion publications, but if the mini-issue out now is an indicator it will definitely serve as a trailblazer that will force those that follow to meet the high standard they have set. Congratulations to everyone involved in the effort to bring it back and take it to the next level! Be sure to stop by and tell Owner/Publisher Jessica Kane that you heard about SKORCH on Full Figure Plus.

Jessica,
My pleasure. I will be getting my subscription to support a magazine that I think is desperately needed in our community.
